The Kuemper Catholic Knights defeated the Pleasantville Trojans 7-1 Thursday night at Principal Park. The Trojans were limited to just two hits the entire game, both coming in the sixth inning.
Tyler Laing took the mound for Kuemper retiring his first ten batters faced, seven of them on strikes. Laing pitched a complete game allowing just one run on two hits and finishing the night with nine strikeouts.
The Knights took an early lead as a pair of singles and a fielder’s choice loaded up the bases for Ben Berg. The sophomore capitalized on the opportunity, driving a RBI-single to left field for Kuemper’s first run of the game. Mike Mohr extended the Knights’ lead with a two-RBI single to left. A run walked in gave Kuemper the 4-0 lead.
Kuemper added an insurance run in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Knights finished the night with ten hits as Laing paced the Kuemper’s offense going 3-for-3 with a RBI.
Pleasantville got on the board in the sixth as back-to-back singles by Gauge Van Haalen and Zeb Adreon broke up Laing’s no-hit bid. A fielder’s choice brought Van Haalen home making the score 7-1, Kuemper.
Colton Major was tagged with the loss for Pleasantville, giving up five runs – four earned – on six hits and two walks, while whiffing two batters.
Kuemper Catholic (26-11) advances to the championship game and will face Clear Lake at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Principal Park.
Pleasantville finishes its season 29-10.
