The End of a 75-Year Collection of Farm Toys

AMES, Iowa -- An Ames man will be auctioning off his toy tractor collection that he has been working on for 75 years.

David Baker grew up on a farm in Hardin County. He wanted to become a farmer, but that didn’t work out.

"Well I thought of it a lot, yes, but things just didn't work out so I made the toys take the place," said Baker.

He worked as a lineman for Alliant Energy for 33 years. He collected tractors of every color and brand. He also collected farm implements, like balers, planters, wagons, and combines and corn pickers.

"Really I like them all but I grew up with John Deere and Oliver and like working around I drove a lot of internationals," said Baker. "I'm not that prejudiced, I like them all."

He used to live in Stanhope, where there used to be a farm toy show and that was how he got hooked.

The collection is estimated at over 1,500 pieces will be auctioned on Saturday at the Courtyard by Marriott in Ankeny.

Details of the auction can be found here.
