BONDURANT, Iowa -- 10-year-old Ava Hutchinson of Bondurant wants to be like every other child her age.
"I like to ride my bike and do crafts. I like to go to the softball fields and cheer my sister on," said Ava.
But she's not, she's stronger.
"She beat cancer in September in 2009," said her father, Kris Hutchinson. "That was an amazing feeling. We had been through a year and a half of treatment."
After the victory and another routine check-up just last month at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, her strength would be tested again.
"I was really really sad and I was scared," said Ava.
Ava was diagnosed with hi-grade Glioma, cancerous tumors with the largest of them on her brain stem.
"The Oncologist, she says it's incurable and the chemotherapy we can give her is only going to ease the pain," said Kris.
Ava's parents then made a decision to each take a leave of absence from work without pay to be with their two daughters around the clock.
"Spend every moment we have because I don't know when that candle is going to get blown out," said Kris.
To help keep that candle going, the Iowa Blitz, a Bondurant girls softball league, which Ava's sister Emma competes, is stepping up to the plate and raising money to pay at least one month's mortgage.
"We are more about life lessons than skills," said 14 and under coach Joe Hoch. "Helping families in need and being there. It's our family and we felt we had to do something."
The league also made Ava an honorary member on her sister's 14U team.
"Not once was there anything out of her mouth like I'm sick or poor me or anything else," said Hoch.
With the season over, Ava now relies on another team. "God, he's always looking out for me and helping me," said Ava.
"God, he's always looking out for me and helping me," said Ava.
The situation may be dire, "I wouldn`t wish it upon anybody," said Ava's father, but Ava refuses to back down.
"I would just want to kill cancer," said Ava. "Kill it and make it not come back."
Ava begins her round of chemotherapy Thursday, Aug. 4. The Iowa Blitz team is accepting donations.
