City Leaders Present New Strategy to Help Bring More Immigrants to Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — City leaders unveiled a strategy to help bring more immigrants to the city Wednesday as they say global talent is a key component of Des Moines’ workforce.

The plan includes creating a welcoming center and providing better resources to foreign businesses.

Leaders say it’s time to stop thinking of immigration as a political issue, and instead, an opportunity.

“40% of Fortune 500 companies are owned by immigrants or their children and that manifests in Iowa with Casey’s General Stores whose CEO is a child of an immigrant. Iowa has a significant tie to these national trends of immigration.”

Leaders say immigrants represent about $4 billion worth of earned income in Iowa.
