Police Chief on Officer Shawn Miller’s Death: A ‘huge loss for us’

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - "Today at 1 p.m. I was scheduled to meet with Officer Miller in his final interview to promote him to the rank of sergeant."

West Des Moines Police Chief Shaun LaDue is mourning the loss of a member of his department. On Wednesday, Officer Shawn Miller, a 26-year veteran of the force, was killed in a traffic accident returning from a court proceeding in Dallas County.

On Thursday, Chief LaDue was looking forward to meeting with Officer Miller to discuss his promotion.

"I thought about it for at least a week, about the questions I wanted to ask him because Officer Miller had a lot of insights," Chief LaDue was excited for Miller to influence the department moving forward. "I saw him as a critical part to that leadership element of our organization and its future."

Outside of the West Des Moines Police Department, a memorial at Officer Miller's squad car is growing as the community mourns the loss of an officer.

Chief LaDue said that outside of his patrol duties, Officer Miller was a mentor and friend to many in the department. He would volunteer to help fellow officers on and off the job.

"This is . . .  a very huge loss for us."
