1-Year-Old Boy Killed in Accident Involving Tanker Truck

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Iowa -- The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office says a 1-year-old boy is dead after an accident involving a tanker truck on Saturday.

Authorities say they were called to the 1100 block of Fairbank-Amish Boulevard around 10 a.m. on a report of an accident with injuries at a residence.

They say the owner of the tanker truck, 38-year-old Eric Gilliam of Cedar Rapids, was preparing to leave the residence when the accident happened.

The report says 1-year-old Samuel Helmuth, who resided at the residence, ran out in front of the truck and was struck by the driver side front tire. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gilliam was unable to see the child due to a blind spot caused by the nose of the truck, according to authorities.

At this time, the incident appears to be an accident, so no charges have been filed.
