Community Mourns Loss of West Des Moines Police Officer as Visitation Held

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowans are reaching out to the family of a West Des Moines police officer killed on his way back from court on Wednesday.

Visitation for Officer Shawn Miller began at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Support has poured in from family, friends, strangers and the law enforcement community since the time when West Des Moines Police say a driver pulled out in front of the longtime officer causing a crash. Miller had been riding his motorcycle on Highway 169 after testifying in a case at the Dallas County courthouse.

Miller served 26 years on the force and also served in the Iowa National Guard in Desert Storm. Both of his parents also worked in law enforcement previously.

Officer Miller leaves behind a wife and three children.

Jodi Whitworth joined the Channel 13 News at 5 with a live report from the visitation.
