BEAVERDALE, Iowa -- Members of VFW Post 9127 in Beaverdale are still in shock about the sudden death of their fellow veteran, West Des Moines Senior Police Officer Shawn Miller.
"I'm going to miss him terribly, he was a super nice guy," said Jerry Hooten, VFW Post 9127 Member. "I still can`t believe it."
Miller proudly served his country in the Iowa National Guard as a military police officer. His overseas deployments took him to Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Desert Storm. Away from his law enforcement career with the West Des Moines Police Department, Miller was a member at Post 9127.
"I mean all around, best guy you ever want to know," said Hooten. "Proud to have known him."
Hooten remembers Miller's sense of humor and how well he got along with everybody.
"We had a lot of good times here at the Post," said Hooten. "Conversations were always good."
Not only was Officer Miller a member of Post 9127, for a couple of years he was Post Commander.
"He did an excellent job running the post, ran all the projects, everything," said Dave Wilkins, VFW Post 9127 Member. "It was one-year increments and he was obviously re-elected. Then he gave up that position to further his education, to further his police career."
Wilkins says Miller helped revitalize Post 9127.
"The Post had a fire in their kitchen a few years before he took command and he was instrumental in getting the Post back together, getting it re-organized, getting things back in flow again," said Wilkins.
Wilkins says that's just who Miller was. He understood when problems existed and he had solutions to fix them.
"He was a salt of the earth kind of guy," said Wilkins. "Always looked out for everybody and wouldn`t leave anybody hanging if they needed some help."
Members say Miller was Post Commander of VFW Post 9127 in Beaverdale from 2011 to 2013.
