DES MOINES, Iowa - It's been five years since a Des Moines police officer was critically injured while directing traffic at the Iowa State Fair.
Officer Phoukham Tran was hit by a drunk driver on August 19, 2011. The crash sent him 47 feet and left him with a punctured lung, a serious head injury and several broken bones.
As part of his recovery, he spends three days a week at the YMCA Healthy Living Center.
"They did help me a lot on my arm and my legs," Tran said.
On Thursday, the Y shared Tran's story as part of a monthly Club Altitude luncheon.
Tran, a 30 year veteran of the force, says the accident forced him into retirement. He's been spending his time since the accident working on his recovery and spending time with family. He also became a new grandpa in June.
"We happy, we excited about it, we hope to have a chance to babysit him sometime in the near future."
Tran said although he's retired, his colleagues drop by to check on him often. He says the support from the Des Moines Police Department has helped in his recovery as well.
