ALTOONA, Iowa – The Metro’s first outlet mall can now be seen from Interstate 80 and Highway 65.
Steel beams were erected this week by crews at the future site of the Outlets of Des Moines. The project, set to be complete in October 2017, will support 500 construction jobs, according to developers. They also say the future mall will employ anywhere from 800 to 1,000 people on-site, and an additional 180 off-site. Despite a few weeks of heavy rain and humidity, crews say construction is still on schedule.
“This is one of my favorite parts of the construction process – when you can begin to see the buildings emerging from the ground,” said Mike Barelli, Vice President for New England Development. “Despite some of the recent weeks of heavy rain and extremely high heat indexes, everything is on schedule and we are extremely pleased with how things are progressing.”
When completed in 2017, the outlet mall will feature major-label outlet stores and restaurants, though specifics have not been announced as of yet.
