DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police say an 18-year-old Tama man was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon and they say speed may have played a role.

According to police, Kyaus Davenport was the driver of a vehicle that slammed into an east side garage, killing him and injuring 17-year-old Amaris Walker. Both are from Tama.

The accident happened in the 2600 block of E. Sheridan around 3:40 p.m. Police say a southbound vehicle on Hubbell Avenue had left the road and vaulted into a home. The home’s garage partially collapsed.

Davenport was pronounced dead at the scene. Walker was taken a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. She is expected to survive.

Police say the crash caused major damage to the home and car. The initial investigation indicates the vehicle may have been traveling at an excessive speed.
