Police Investigating Fatal High-Speed Crash Involving Convicted Felon

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Police in Des Moines are investigating a fatal high-speed crash involving a convicted felon Sunday morning.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. when Des Moines Police Officers initiated a traffic stop at the 3300 block of MLK Parkway. The vehicle had no license plates and pulled into the Hy-Vee parking lot near the area and then suddenly sped off to escape the officers.

Just north of Douglas Avenue, the suspect's vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck another vehicle.

The driver of the southbound vehicle has been identified as 41-year-old Jason Hunt of Des Moines. Police say he was killed in the crash and a passenger, 40-year-old Angela Denning of Des Moines, was injured and transported to the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that police were chasing has been identified as 34-year-old Darnell Browder of Des Moines. Police say Browder is a convicted felon and had a gun in the car, which is another felony.

Browder, as well as a passenger in his vehicle, 18-year-old Davion Barbar of Des Moines, were both injured and transported to the hospital.

“This is a traumatic event for our officers also,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek said. “They're out there trying to do the right thing, and someone dies as a consequence of an absolutely ridiculous choice that a person makes in the moment because they don't want to go to jail.”

Officers say Browder and Barbar are being questioned and no charges have been filed yet.
