Mother of Girl on Run with Escaped Inmate Pleads for Safe Return

WARREN COUNTY, Iowa -- A nationwide search is underway for a man who escaped from the Warren County jail at 10:19 p.m. Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Scott Grimes was able to escape when one of the correctional officers was delivering medication to inmates. He’s believed to be on the run with his girlfriend, 19-year-old Kayla Schultz.

“I kept calling her and calling her and saying where are you? Where are you? The police was just here. Where are you and she wouldn't answer me,” said mom Paula Schultz.

Schultz admits that her daughter has had her share of trouble with drugs and the law, but planned to check into rehab and turn her life around.

“I raised my daughter to know right from wrong. I just am sick. I'm afraid she's going to be killed. They're making her sound like she's this horrible, dangerous person and she's really not,” said Schultz.

Authorities say the pair is known to assault police officers.

Grimes was being held in the Warren County jail for Assault on a Peace Office, two counts of 2nd Degree Theft, three counts of Third Degree Burglary, Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Offense and Providing False Information

After breaking out jail Sunday, it’s believed Grimes rode a stolen bike about three miles to a house on 118th Avenue. There, he’s accused of stealing another set of wheels, a white Kia Rio.

After picking up Schultz in New Virgina, the couple was seen buying gas at the Kum & Go before heading south to Missouri. Authorities tracked them about 70 miles away to Bethany, Missouri where they’re suspected of stealing another car, this time, a blue 2002 Ford Taurus with Missouri license plate HK7Y8D.
