DES MOINES, Iowa -- On the grand concourse the governor proclaimed the benefits of wind energy, lease income to farmers, construction jobs, and generating clean energy.he said the state is now also focusing on developing solar energy.

"Today is Renewable Energy Day,” said Governor Terry Branstad. “In Iowa, I can't think of a better place to do it here at the Iowa State Fair."
Early Tuesday morning, the Youth Belgian Horse Show was underway. Young people are judged on their horsemanship and their poise in the ring. They trotted and walked the giant horses around the ring while driving two wheel buggies.
"It's a lot of work because every horse is a little bit different,” said Tom Greenlee of Pine Grove PA. “They all have their own personality and have to work with that horse, there is a lot of work involved with these youth drivers."
The winners of the Giant Pumpkin Contest have been named. Top prize goes to John and Merri Barlow from Gays Mills, Wisconsin. Their pumpkin weighed just over 1,500 pounds. Second place went to Dave and Jackie Downs of Bloomfield. Their pumpkin weighed 902 pounds.
Seth Eberhart of Mediapolis built a replica of the grain elevator. It’s a 1/16th scale model and lets you see inside those iconic Iowa wooden elevators. The model won first place at the National Farm Toy Show. This model is located at the at the Cownie Cultural Center.
