DES MOINES, Iowa – The U.S. Navy Dive Team paid a visit to the Blank Park Zoo Friday.

It’s part of Des Moines Navy Week, a week designed to give Iowans a chance to learn about the U.S. Navy and what they do for national security. Kids could swing by the seal exhibit at Blank Park Zoo Friday, where the U.S. Navy Dive team let them try on the dive equipment, and educated groups on what they do. One diver says most people knew about his occupation, but some did not.

“On the other end of the spectrum, there’s people who really don’t even know what a diver is – why would you get under the water,” said John Baxley, a U.S. Navy Diver. “That makes no sense to them, so it’s really kind of interesting explaining that to people.”

Des Moines Navy Week has hosted nearly 70 outreach events this week; local Navy reserve and recruiting sailors also spent time doing community service projects with Habitat for Humanity and the Food Bank of Iowa.
