AMES, Iowa -- A new Uber-like ap is helping ISU students and others on campus get around in a safe manner.

"Very similar to Uber, but in the end you don't pay,” said Anthony Greiner, who is the Community Outreach Specialist for the ISU Police Department.

The Safe Ride app service is offered between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. from points on campus, university-owned housing, Greek parking lots and the basketball practice facility.

The app can be used by students, faculty, and staff. Members of the public can also get a ride on campus by calling 515-294-4444.

Last year, the ride program without the app did 6,400 rides. This year, since Friday when the app launched, 70 rides have been given.

"In the past we've offered a very similar program 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.,” said Greiner. “It was limited at one point in time to when school or classes were in session but now we've expanded that to 365."
