Power Mostly Restored After Overnight Storms Knock it Out

DES MOINES, Iowa — Wind gusts and sheets of rain created a traffic mess and left some central Iowans in the dark for hours.

The storm Sunday night into Monday morning storm kept MidAmerican Energy crews busy overnight.

The lightning and high winds knocked down power lines in Des Moines, leaving thousands without power. At one point, nearly 7,000 homes were affected. Most customers have had their power restored.

The outage also left a section of traffic lights out along University Avenue near Drake. Road crews had to put out stop signs to direct traffic in the dark. t took until after 1:00 a.m. for those lights to come back on.
