JOHNSTON, Iowa — The tough topic of veteran suicides is coming to the forefront in central Iowa Thursday.

It’s been a hot button issue recently with the investigation into Brandon Ketchum’s death. The Iowa veteran took his own life after he was denied in-patient treatment at Iowa City’s VA hospital.

Both of Iowa’s senators have pushed for an investigation into the VA in the wake Ketchum’s and other veterans’ deaths.

The VA is working to encourage conversation before it’s too late. Its Mental Health Summit begins Thursday morning at the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

This year, they’re focusing specifically on the mental health of female veterans and the resources available for help.
