DES MOINES, Iowa – A new $85-million, 26-story building will change the skyline in downtown Des Moines.

Blackbird Development announced Friday that the new building, named 701 Walnut, will be located at Seventh and Walnut Streets, the site of the former Younkers building that was destroyed in a 2014 fire. Plans for the new tower include 5,500 square feet of ground floor commercial space, 276 luxury apartments, fully staffed lobby with concierge services, 2,000 square foot co-working space for residents and an electric vehicle garage. Three skywalk connections and an urban skywalk park featuring an outdoor theater and reservable kitchen for public gatherings are included in the plans.

The plans also include a pool near the top of the tower that extends out from the building, hanging above city streets below.

Construction on the tower is expected to begin late this year.
