CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – It’s all hands on deck for Cedar Rapids residents gearing up for impending flooding by Monday.

Residents throughout downtown Cedar Rapids were chipping in to lend a helping hand to neighbors. Volunteers showed up at homes to help move personal belongings and lay down sandbags. City workers are doing their part, too, to ensure minimal flood damage takes place. Many roads and intersections downtown have already been blocked off.

One resident who lost everything in the 2008 floods, Robbin Pierce, says it feels familiar this time around – but everyone is much more prepared.

“In 2008 we didn’t have time to prepare and to get anything out,” she said. “We literally lost everything – we left with a bag of clothes. This time we’re able to move things up onto the second floor and prepare a lot more.”

The Cedar River is expected to crest in Cedar Rapids Monday evening.
