CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – As the Cedar River is expected to crest in Cedar Rapids Monday, residents and city workers are preparing for the worst, and the American Red Cross is stepping in to help.

The group has opened three shelters across Eastern Iowa for anyone affected by flooding. The shelters include a place to sleep, clothing, supplies, first aid, food, water, and comfort.

“We’ll make sure they have food, and water, and a place to lay their head down,” said Kara Kelly with the American Red Cross. “It’s also a great place to talk, to get a hug, to maybe get some comfort from our Red Cross volunteers. We really want to make it as comfortable as we possibly can.”

The shelters can be located here:

  • Cedar Hills Community Church: 6455 E Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405
  • University of Northern Iowa – West Gym: 1227 W 27th Street (campus), Cedar Falls, IA 50614 (parking next to gymnasium)
  • Grace Baptist Church – Waverly: 1110 4th Street NW, Waverly, IA 50677
