DES MOINES, Iowa – An 18-year-old bicyclist is hospitalized in critical condition following an accident involving a garbage truck Thursday morning.

It happened at the intersection of MLK Jr. Parkway and Euclid Avenue just after 8:00 a.m. An off-duty police officer reported the accident.

Police say an 18-year-old male was bicycling eastbound on the sidewalk north of Euclid, when he ran into a garbage truck that was turning from southbound MLK to westbound Euclid. After the collision it appears the bicyclist was run over by the rear tires of the truck.

He was taken to Methodist Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Police aren’t sure whether the bicyclist didn’t see the truck, or may have had a mechanical error the prevented him from stopping. They continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

The bicyclist’s name has not been released.
