Polk County Minimum Wage Increase Approved

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Workers in Polk County will be getting a raise.

The Polk County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday morning to increase the minimum wage. The new minimum wage will be $10.75 an hour.

The ordinance will be enacted over three years and includes a measure to limit the increase for workers under the age of 18. Those workers would only receive 85 percent of an adult’s pay.

“As critical as some folks have been, we are adopting an ordinance that will be the highest minimum wage in the state of Iowa of any local government that’s been adopted, it will be the highest minimum wage of any state adjacent to Iowa that Polk County has adopted as far as ordinance. And I think that is a very positive step forward,” said Supervisor Tom Hockensmith.

Four members of the five-member board voted to approve ordinance’s third and final reading. Supervisor Steve Van Oort was not present at the meeting.
