WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Drivers in West Des Moines may have to wait until next year to use a popular road again.

A widening project on 50th Street, from Mills Civic to E.P. True Parkway, closed the road in June.

Officials are ready to work on paving but say Century Link is delaying their progress. The communications provider originally promised to relocate underground cables by the end of August, but it still hasn’t finished that work.

Officials say that’s costing them time and money.

West Des Moines City Manager Tom Hadden says, “We had to spend an additional $87,000 for rock, so we have to over excavate put the rock on top and then we can pave if there are wet periods and cool periods so that’s, we had to do that to keep the project moving forward.”

Crews are trying to finish the project before winter.
