DES MOINES, Iowa – One man is dead following a crash in Des Moines involving a motorcycle and car Saturday night.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., Des Moines Police Department patrol officers responded to the intersection of 44th and Hickman to investigate a report of an accident involving a car and motorcycle.
Upon arrival, officers and medics found the driver of the motorcycle, 22-year-old Edwin Ramirez, of Des Moines, dead at the scene. Authorities say Ramirez was not wearing a helmet and crashed into another vehicle due to excessive speed.
Loved ones of Ramirez have turned the crash site into a makeshift memorial with flowers and candles. On Sunday, a vigil was held outside of Ramirez' family home. Dozens of people gathered to say their goodbyes including Rameriz' fiance.
"He was always smiling, we actually used to call him "Smiley" because he would smile about everything," says Brittany Watson.
Watson says her fiance was an adrenaline junkie and had a passion for repairing motorcycles and cars. She wants people to remember Ramirez for his love of dance and his outgoing personality.
Morgan Schwienbart, a friend of the victim, says others often would tell him to slow down when riding his bike but would rarely listen.
"He was out on a nice day to ride and speed got the best of him," she says. The family is in the process of raising money to help pay for funeral expenses, you can donate here.
The driver of the vehicle involved, 42-year-old Threase Harms, of Windsor Heights, was not injured. An adult passenger in the car sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation.
