DES MOINES, Iowa - Urbandale restaurant, Sam & Gabe's, is prepping to open its second location in the ground level of The Lyon in the East Village next month, but it gave some guests a sneak peak Saturday night in the name of charity.
The fundraiser treated guests to some of the restaurant's small plates, as well as music and a unique view of the Des Moines cityscape. The money raised Saturday night will benefit the Iowa Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's annual Light the Night campaign, raising money for blood cancer research. It also benefits the Erin Moomey Dance Scholarship, named after an Ankeny girl who passed away from Leukemia three years ago. Sam & Gabe's owner, Shawn Chapman, says Moomey was his daugther's friend, and opening the new restaurant early for this event felt like the right thing to do.
"Tonight is actually the third anniversary of her passing, so it's a sad night, but we want to celebrate it, because she was an amazing person, and she was great friends with my daughter," he said. "And 10-year-olds shouldn't lose their friends, so we want to do everything we can to ensure this isn't happening to anyone else."
The benefit expects to raise $15,000. Sam & Gabes at The Lyon will officially open to the public on November 15.
