POLK COUNTY, Iowa -- The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.

Officials say 57-year-old Joseph Davis, of Des Moines, died in an accident that happened in the 10300 block of Polk City Drive Saturday around 5:25 p.m.

Only one lane of traffic was open at that time because of construction and both Davis and another motorcyclist were traveling north in the southbound lanes, following a lead vehicle, when the crash happened. Officials say a pickup truck behind the motorcycles tried to pass them as the road opened into two lanes again.

A witness told deputies Davis was forced to lay down his bike because of the passing truck. Davis’ bike then collided with a stopped minivan which was waiting to travel south on Polk City Drive.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in the minivan was injured.

The name of the pickup truck driver is not being released at this time.

The Iowa State Patrol is handling the investigation into the crash.
