Trauma of Officers’ Murders Shakes Des Moines-Area Community

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Des Moines metro community remains in shock and disbelief, one day after two metro police officers were found murdered in their squad cars.

Sgt. Tony Beminio with the Des Moines Police Department and Officer Justin Martin from the Urbandale Police Department didn't even have a chance to defend themselves Wednesday morning.

Officer Martin was the first victim. Fellow officers found him shot dead in his cruiser shortly after 1:00 a.m. near 70th Street and Aurora Avenue after receiving a 911 call.

No more than 20 minutes later another round of gunfire rang out, just a mile south. At Merle Hay and Sheridan Sgt. Tony Beminio was found shot in his squad car.

Within hours police were on the hunt for 46-year-old Scott Greene, the prime suspect, who was considered armed and dangerous.

Just after 9:00 a.m. Greene was found wandering along a Dallas County road and turned himself into a Department of Natural Resources employee. He was not armed, but officers found a gun in the area where he was taken into custody.

After complaining of a physical ailment, Greene was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police say they’ll question Greene after he is released from the hospital.
