DES MOINES, Iowa – Des Moines police were involved in a slow-speed chase early Tuesday morning that ended downtown.

Police tried to pull over a vehicle just before 5:00 a.m. on a traffic violation but the driver, 46-year-old Donald Stevens, refused to stop. As officers followed him, he was observed throwing a large amount of methamphetamine from his vehicle.

The chase proceeded slowly, sometimes at speeds of only 10 miles per hour, eventually ending at 12th and Locust after police used a pit maneuver and stop sticks.

Stevens is being held in the Polk County Jail on charges of eluding, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana, driving with a cancelled or revoked license, and interference with official acts.
