WINTERSET, Iowa- Highway 92 had traffic jammed up for a while on Tuesday morning. The cause was a giant 120 foot. long, 30 foot high steel bridge being transported on the road. The bridge traveled from east of Patterson, IA, to just northeast of Winterset.
The Jorgensen Bridge was bought for one dollar, but the cost to move the structure to it’s new home, a half a million dollars. Grants from FEMA and the Iowa DOT covered the cost.
The bridge will be placed across a spillway at Cedar Lake near Winterset. A new bike and pedestrian trail is going eventually all around the lake.
The move took a little over two hours to complete, and then some time to get the bridge right up to where it will be placed.
A huge crane will lift it onto the bridge pilings on Saturday.
