DES MOINES, Iowa — For the 19th time this year an Iowan has been diagnosed with the Zika virus.
The Iowa Department of Public Health identifies the patient only as an adult female. She had recently traveled to Mexico, one of the areas where the mosquito borne illness is prevalent.
All 19 Iowans diagnosed this year have traveled to known Zika-affected areas. That includes 18 patients who traveled to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Central America and Southern Florida.
None of the 13 women who’ve tested positive for the disease was pregnant. Zika virus is know to cause serious birth defects in newborns.
