DES MOINES, Iowa — Don’t be alarmed if you see flames and smoke in some of Des Moines’ parks over the next few days.

The Des Moines Parks Department is planning controlled burns at Gray’s Lake, McHenry Park, and Elm Grove Cemetery Thursday and Friday. The burns will help get rid of weeds and reduce the threat of wildfires.

Officials will determine burn locations and times at the parks based on weather conditions.

Clive also has a controlled burn planned near Greenbelt Park. That’s set to start around 10:30 Thursday morning.
