MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – The father of a Marshalltown infant is behind bars, accused of causing serious injuries to his son.

The Marshalltown Police Department says officers were called on a suspected case of child abuse Wednesday night. When officers arrived at Central Iowa Healthcare’s emergency room, medical staff told them of the serious injuries to the child and let them know the two month-old was being transported by air ambulance to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Following an investigation the father of the baby, 18-year-old Ryan Nichols, was arrested. He is charged with willful injury, neglect or abandonment of dependent person, and child endangerment causing bodily injury.

Nichols is being held in the Marshall County Jail and is expected to make his initial court appearance Thursday.
