John Sears: 13 Fascinating Facts
• In 8th grade I cracked 3 vertebrae in my lower back from the stress of growing. I had to wear a back brace (full with ‘bendable’ metal rods) for 1 year. To make things more embarrassing for a 14 year old, the metal detector would go off at the airport and I had to take off my shirt, then show and explain that I had a back brace on.

• I played the piano for 4 years. I can still play ‘Yankee Doodle.’ I played the trumpet for a week in 6th grade.

• I was an intern at channel 13 in 2002. My very first interview was with Tito Ortiz (the light heavyweight champion of the world), this before MMA was really big. I interviewed him about the Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight and whether or not he could take Tyson. He said Tyson wouldn’t last 30 seconds in the ring with him. Pretty sure that interview jumpstarted his career.

• I’ve had a high metabolism my whole life. I rarely ever gain weight, and yes I’ve tried. I used to drink three 2200 calorie protein shakes a day, it did nothing.

• I played baseball for 1 year in high school. I was a 1st baseman and could do the splits. In my very first at bat, on the very first pitch, I hit a homerun over the center field wall. Some say the ball still hasn’t landed. I retired after that season.

• My favorite sport to watch is football. My favorite sport to play is golf. When I was younger I played all sports, but was best at soccer and baseball.

• I was incredibly shy when I was younger.

• I had white/blonde hair growing up, it’s now brown. My wife has brown hair. Our daughter has red hair, go figure. I love it.

• I taught swim lessons for 5 years as a college summer job, proof that even I can somewhat get a tan. My very first job was at Soccer Connections, a soccer sporting goods store.

• One of the very first stories I covered as a ‘paid’ sports reporter was Boston vs St. Louis in the 2004 World Series. My first job was in Jefferson City, MO…Huge Cardinal territory.

• I’m a sucker for good pepperoni pizza, BBQ, lasagna, pancheros burritos, mint chocolate chip shakes and hot tamales.

• I had 2 pet iguana’s growing up. 1 named Iggy, the other Bo (after Bo Jackson).

• I (along with 2 buddies) used to sweep the floor at halftime of our boy’s high school basketball games. We would dress up in full costume while sweeping.

John Sears joined the Channel 13 Sports team in July of 2012 after spending almost 6 years at KCRG in Cedar Rapids, IA as a Sports Reporter/Anchor. Prior to that John spent a year at KMEG in Sioux City and a year at KRCG in Jefferson City, MO. There’s a good chance John has covered every high school team in the state of Iowa, in some sport.

John is local, growing up his entire life in the Des Moines area. He attended Dowling High School and later the University of Iowa. He graduated with a degree in journalism and communications. John has covered everything sports related. You name it; it’s likely he’s covered it.

In his spare time (not that he has much) John likes to play golf, go out to a good movie, hang out with friends and family, and cheer on his beloved Chicago Bears. John and his wife Maria married in 2008 and are kept busy at home with their wild daughter Adrienne, their beagle named Bob, and cat Belle.

    No surprise, UNI Wins Again 56-39 over Bradley

    CEDAR FALLS – The 11th ranked UNI Panthers just keep on winning.  Northern Iowa beat Bradley Saturday 56-39 in Cedar Falls. Nate Buss and Wes Washpun each scored 11 points while Seth Tuttle scored 9 and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Panthers are now 26-2 overall, 15-1 in the Missouri Valley. UNI has won 15 straight games which is the 4th longest streak in the country. UNI hosts Evansville on Wednesday.

    DES MOINES – Day two of the state wrestling tournament is in the books. The tournament started with 672 wrestlers, now just 84 remain with a chance at a state title.     Drake Women Steamroll In-State Rival UNI

    DES MOINES – Chalk up another win for the Drake women, the Bulldogs crush in-state rival Northern Iowa 87-67 Friday night. Lizzy Wendell dominated scoring 30 points.  Freshman Maddy Dean had a huge game, 23 points and 10 rebounds. Drake led by just 3 at the half but blew it open in the 2nd. Ellie Herzberg led the Panthers with 17 points. Drake is now 16-7 overall 11-1 in the MVC.  Bulldogs are home again next Friday against Evansville.

  • White Gets 2 Technicals, Didn’t Want to Look at Mom

    ANN ARBOR – The Hawkeyes picked up a huge road win Thursday night 72-54 over Michigan. 5 starters scored in double figures including Aaron White. It was an interesting game for White who also picked up 2 technical fouls in the span of 2 minutes.  The first technical was for taunting after White blocked the shot of a Wolverine player.  Less than 2 minutes later White dunked, and hung on the rim, and received another technical foul.     DES MOINES – Make it 2 straight wins for the Drake men. The Bulldogs beat Evansville on Saturday 70-65 at the Knapp Center. Reed Timmer led the way with 18 points, Gary Ricks added 14. Drake is now 6-16 overall, 3-7 in the MVC.  Dogs host Southern Illinois on Wednesday.

  • Hawkeyes Dominate Gophers on the Mat

    MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The top ranked Hawkeye wrestling team made a statement Friday night against #2 Minnesota, beating the Gophers 23-12. Iowa jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a fall right out of the gates by Nick Moore at 165 pounds. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back.   • Drake Women Win Again, Wendell Drops 43

    DES MOINES – The Drake women just keep on winning. Bulldogs beat Missouri State Friday night 94-89 in overtime to stay undefeated, 8-0 in the Missouri Valley. Sophomore Lizzy Wendell matched a career high with 43 points.  Caitlin Ingle recorded here first triple double of her career, 14 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists. Drake hosts 8-0 Wichita State on Sunday at the Knapp Center.

    WEST DES MOINES – Any time Dowling and Valley meet, in any sport, the stakes go up. Friday night it was a top 5 showdown in girls basketball.  2nd ranked Dowling held off a late charge from the 3rd ranked Tigers to win 69-57.  Audrey Faber led the way for the Maroons with 25 points.     6th Ranked Badgers Crush Hawkeyes

    MADISON – The Hawkeyes entered the Top 25 this week, but that stay may not last long.  Wisconsin buried Iowa Tuesday night 82-50 in Madison. Wisconsin jumped out to a 13-4 lead and never looked back.  Sam Dekker led the way with 17 for the Badgers.     WEST DES MOINES – The Iowa Wild aren’t having a banner season but they still know how to have fun. Tuesday afternoon 4 Wild players visited Western Hills Elementary to play floor hockey with the kids.
