John Sears: 13 Fascinating Facts
• In 8th grade I cracked 3 vertebrae in my lower back from the stress of growing. I had to wear a back brace (full with ‘bendable’ metal rods) for 1 year. To make things more embarrassing for a 14 year old, the metal detector would go off at the airport and I had to take off my shirt, then show and explain that I had a back brace on.

• I played the piano for 4 years. I can still play ‘Yankee Doodle.’ I played the trumpet for a week in 6th grade.

• I was an intern at channel 13 in 2002. My very first interview was with Tito Ortiz (the light heavyweight champion of the world), this before MMA was really big. I interviewed him about the Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight and whether or not he could take Tyson. He said Tyson wouldn’t last 30 seconds in the ring with him. Pretty sure that interview jumpstarted his career.

• I’ve had a high metabolism my whole life. I rarely ever gain weight, and yes I’ve tried. I used to drink three 2200 calorie protein shakes a day, it did nothing.

• I played baseball for 1 year in high school. I was a 1st baseman and could do the splits. In my very first at bat, on the very first pitch, I hit a homerun over the center field wall. Some say the ball still hasn’t landed. I retired after that season.

• My favorite sport to watch is football. My favorite sport to play is golf. When I was younger I played all sports, but was best at soccer and baseball.

• I was incredibly shy when I was younger.

• I had white/blonde hair growing up, it’s now brown. My wife has brown hair. Our daughter has red hair, go figure. I love it.

• I taught swim lessons for 5 years as a college summer job, proof that even I can somewhat get a tan. My very first job was at Soccer Connections, a soccer sporting goods store.

• One of the very first stories I covered as a ‘paid’ sports reporter was Boston vs St. Louis in the 2004 World Series. My first job was in Jefferson City, MO…Huge Cardinal territory.

• I’m a sucker for good pepperoni pizza, BBQ, lasagna, pancheros burritos, mint chocolate chip shakes and hot tamales.

• I had 2 pet iguana’s growing up. 1 named Iggy, the other Bo (after Bo Jackson).

• I (along with 2 buddies) used to sweep the floor at halftime of our boy’s high school basketball games. We would dress up in full costume while sweeping.

Bio:
John Sears joined the Channel 13 Sports team in July of 2012 after spending almost 6 years at KCRG in Cedar Rapids, IA as a Sports Reporter/Anchor. Prior to that John spent a year at KMEG in Sioux City and a year at KRCG in Jefferson City, MO. There’s a good chance John has covered every high school team in the state of Iowa, in some sport.

John is local, growing up his entire life in the Des Moines area. He attended Dowling High School and later the University of Iowa. He graduated with a degree in journalism and communications. John has covered everything sports related. You name it; it’s likely he’s covered it.

In his spare time (not that he has much) John likes to play golf, go out to a good movie, hang out with friends and family, and cheer on his beloved Chicago Bears. John and his wife Maria married in 2008 and are kept busy at home with their wild daughter Adrienne, their beagle named Bob, and cat Belle.

MURPHY’S LAW: Beardown, Cyclone Hawkeye Hoops, Cheetos Addiction

By:  John Sears Believe it or not the college basketball season is here.  Iowa and Iowa State both had exhibition tuneups on Sunday.  Both look like they could have very solid seasons.  I expect BOTH to make the NCAA tournament.  I think both Iowa and ISU finish better than expected.  Iowa is picked to finish 8th in the Big 10, I think they finish in the Top 6, in arguably the toughest conference in the country.  The Cyclones are also […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Boiler Up, Texas Beatdown, 20/20 Vision

By: John Sears Iowa football is no longer in a tailspin.  The Hawkeyes have crash landed and exploded.  0-5 Purdue marched in to Kinnick stadium and completely dominated Iowa.  The Boilermakers racked up almost twice as much yardage as Iowa.  The worst run defense in the Big 10 held the Hawks to a whopping 74 on the ground. Leave it to Iowa to throw a 1 yard out pass on 4th and 3, with the game on the line.  Inexcusable, […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Sam I am, Wolverine Woes, No Show Royce

By: John Sears The Iowa State Cyclones have found their Quarterback.  Sam Richardson torched Kansas in his debut and led the Cyclones to bowl eligibility.  Now, it was 1-10 Kansas, keep that in mind.  But, what I saw from Richardson (yes I was there in person in Lawrence) was a composed QB.  The reason Richardson should be the ISU starting QB is simple, accuracy.  Jantz and Barnett both lack the accuracy a starting QB needs, Richardson does not.  He had […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Bye bye Chiz, Stop Ripping on Jack, Notre Dame

By: John Sears Auburn fired Gene Chizik on Sunday.  That’s life in college football.  It’s all about what you’ve done lately, and lately Auburn is one of the worst teams in the country.  Winless in the SEC will put you on the hot seat, and likely get you fired.  Hard to believe that 2 years ago Chizik was hoisting the national championship trophy with Cam Newton.  If Hawkeye fans think Iowa has slipped, think about Auburn.  The Tigers didn’t even […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Thanksgiving Feast, Season Finale’s, Black Friday

By: John Sears I had two Thanksgiving dinners on Thursday.  I’m stuffed, but actually ready to eat some more.  I love Thanksgiving, a holiday where you can relax, eat, give thanks, sleep, eat, rest, and eat some more.  Apple Crisp = UnderratedPumpkin Pie = Overrated Iowa and Iowa State finish their football season’s on Friday.  The Cyclones are going to a bowl game, Iowa is not.  I think this season has underwhelmed Iowans.  Hawkeyes have been a complete disappointment while […]

MURPHY’S LAW: No Change for Hawks, Lottery bust, Relay Win

By: John Sears Kirk Ferentz met the media on Wednesday, nothing happened.  Ferentz talked about the disappointing season and how they’re ready to get back to work, etc.  It was nothing that fans were hoping to hear.  Ferentz said he expects all of his assistants to be back next season, including offensive coordinator Greg Davis.  I sort of expected Kirk to come out and say Davis was stepping down as OC, but then again what was I thinking?  It’s hard […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Mastodons, Crazy Haircut, #JustDrewIt

By: John Sears The Iowa State volleyball team made their 7th straight NCAA tournament appearance Thursday night.  Their first round opponent?  IPFW.  Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne.  Quick, without looking do you know their mascot?  You’ll never guess.  The Mastodons.  Did you know there is a rock group named ‘Mastodon?’  Seriously, here’s a picture of their group.  ——->   Here’s a real Mastodon.  Looks like a giant hairy elephant.    Louisville is headed to a BCS game after beating Rutgers.  The Cardinals […]

MURPHY’S LAW: Rivalry No More, Husker No Show, Johnny Heisman?

By: John Sears Iowa crushed Iowa State in wrestling on Saturday 32-3.  This used to be one of my favorite events to cover every year.  Why? Because you could always expect drama, fireworks, maybe even some pushing and shoving from coaches.  This is no longer a good rivalry.  Tom Brands barely gets out of his chair during this dual anymore.  The Hawks have now won 9 straight over the Cyclones, it’s getting worse every year.  I have no idea what […]

  • MURPHY’S LAW: Pray for Newtown, Hazzle Dazzle, Big ‘Ol Fish

By: John Sears Friday was incredibly hard to concentrate on putting a sportscast together.  The tragedy in Newtown, CT is unimaginable.  As a father of 1 (with another on the way) I can’t even begin to imagine what the parents of the murdered children are going through.  No words.  So many innocent lives taken way too early.  Emotions range from sadness to anger.  Pray for Newtown. I don’t own a gun.  While I fully understand and respect the argument of being able to […]

  • MURPHY’S LAW: Bears-Down, Big 4, Recruiting Woes

By: John Sears The Chicago Bears are not ‘officially’ out of the playoff race, but as far as I’m concerned, they are. After starting 7-1, the Bears are now 8-6.  Swept by the Packers, who clinched the North at Soldier Field, doesn’t get much worse than that for Bears fans.  So, who’s the best team in the NFL?  Patriots?  Packers?  Falcons?  49ers?  Giants?  Texans?  Broncos?  How about the Seahawks?  They just dropped 50 points for the 2nd straight week.  How […]

  • MURPHY’S LAW: Snowmageddon, DirecTV, Your Mom

By: John Sears So the mayans were almost right.  12 inches of snow in Des Moines?  Yowza.  I purchased a snowblower a couple years ago, still one of the best purchases ever.  shoveling snow sucks, using a snowblower is still tough work, but its 10X as fast.  I don’t mind snow, but 12 inches at a time, mixed with ice and slush is not fun.  I love DirecTV…When it works.  Ever since the snowstorm hit only my local channels and […]

  • MURPHY’S LAW: Gabby wins, Kaeding beach bound, DirecTV steps up

By: John Sears Gabby Douglas is named the AP female athlete of the year.  What a year for the 17 year old Douglas.  All-around olympic gold medalist, endorsement deals out the ying yang, she meets President Obama, and now named athlete of the year by the Associated Press. She says she plans on competing in 2016, I believe her.   Nate Kaeding is leaving San Diego for Miami.  The former Hawkeye All-American signs with the Dolphins.  He’s got 2 games […]
