13 fascinating facts about Pat Dix:
• I'm the youngest of 32 grandchildren... on my Dad's side.
• My wife's given name is Sarah Elizabeth... my parents were convinced I was going to be a girl and had only picked out a girl's name for me... Sarah Elizabeth.
• I got into radio/TV after my basketball career stalled in High School.
• I can no longer stand to eat bananas, pudding, applesauce and jello because I ate too much of it as a kid, but I can eat the same thing for breakfast every day as an adult and not get tired of it.
• I graduated 437th of 673 people in my high school class and do not make a list of notable alumni. That list includes: President Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel; actors Adam Baldwin, Ann-Margret, Charlton Heston, Rock Hudson, Virginia Madsen, Charlotte Ross and Rainn Wilson; Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman and bassist Pete Wentz; and former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
• I grew up where John Hughes shot most of his best movies... Ferris Buehler, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Risky Business, Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, Uncle Buck.
• I have taken several dream vacations but one of the most memorable was to Scotland with my Dad and Uncle to play some of the greatest golf courses on the planet.
• I played Harold Hill in my high school production of "The Music Man" and never thought I would actually live in Iowa, and yes... I can still do the "Trouble" monologue.
• I was the second best triple jumper on my high school track team.
• I invented a drink called... "The Flaming A" by mistake.
• I've boarded a US Navy Destroyer from a rope ladder while the ship was moving.
• My favorite interview I've ever conducted was actor Hal Holbrook. I asked one question and an hour later he ended a diatribe about society with "Get real Geel!" I said thank you and turned the camera off and I still don't know what that means.
• My sons are Sons of the American Revolution (on my wife's side!), with papers and all to prove it.

You can see Patrick Dix weekday mornings on Channel 13's Today in Iowa morning show.

After attending the University of Missouri School of Journalism, he started his career reporting in chilly Duluth, Minnesota. His second job brought Patrick back south to his home state of Illinois where he anchored and reported for NBC affiliate WEEK-TV in Peoria. Patrick has been recognized for outstanding reporting with awards from The Society of Professional Journalists and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Patrick Dix joined Channel 13 News in February of 1999.

The TV news bug runs in the family. Patrick's oldest brother is the director of Chicago's WGN-TV morning news, and his grandfather spent his career in radio and television in Minneapolis and Chicago.

When he's not in the newsroom, Patrick is usually swinging a golf club. He also enjoys reading, listening to Frank Sinatra and fly-fishing. Patrick married his wife Sally in 1999 and lives in Des Moines.

MORNING BUZZ: Safe, Syria and Kitty-Boy’s Home

Good Morning! It’s the first day of school at our house. Well…yesterday was the first day but it was more paperwork and “get to know you” than it was a real school day. I know I am supposed to make a big deal out days like this but I can’t. It’s preschool. We’ll take a picture of the four of us…I like that as a first day of school tradition. I think I will feel differently when they start ACTUAL […]

MORNING BUZZ: Burning Questions, With Friends like these, and Who Protest?

Good Morning! Lots to talk about in the news today. Burning Questions An old abandoned warehouse is on fire again and it should tell you something that the guys trained to deal with hazardous fires don’t want any part of this one. Seriously, Des Moines Firefighters are standing outside the building doing their best but they’re not going to risk going into the place…even with portable oxygen on! I heard from a few people, “why didn’t the City just clean […]

MORNING BUZZ: Heat, VMA Fallout and Stick it Out There!

Good morning! Another all-inclusive blog with subjects from the last few days. Heat If there is anything good about the heat…and I’m finding it harder to come up with anything…it’s that the 102 degree temperatures make the 92 degree days feel more bearable. Schools are letting out after half days because…who can concentrate? Why, again, do we start school before Labor Day? You can’t convince me that there is as god a chance of 100 degree days in June as […]

MORNING BUZZ: Fakes, Funding and Farewell

Good Morning! For whatever reason tired caught up to me before the week ended. That may explain my poor choice of wardrobe this morning. I threw on a pair of linen pants I hadn’t worn for a while. Along with being a little snug (your tired you eat more), they are a little short. A trip to the dry cleaners is in order today. Hopefully I can cobble something together for Monday morning. I was greeted back into the newsroom […]

MORNING BUZZ: Lights Out, Fish Stories and a Night out at the Fair

Good Morning… Time to catch up on bloggging. Most of you would probably agree, you need a vacation to catch up on your life after a vacation. That’s how I’m feeling at the beginning/end of the week. No complaints…just reality. To The News: Lights Out Clive will turn its’ red light cameras back on…so they can get the money they planned for in the budget…until next Summer when they don’t have any idea how they’ll fill the huge budget gap […]

MORNING BUZZ: Votes, Smarts, and Salaries

Good Morning! It’s been a while. When I started doing this I said I wouldn’t write just to write. I don’t know why but I just haven’t had a lot to say lately. Votes Greene County says yes to a Casino. Unless something significantly changes I can’t see the IRGC saying yes. Dallas County said no toa new Jail and administration building. i don’t know details. It it just the location that put people off or was it the price […]

MORNING BUZZ: Consequences, Three Pinocchios and Bucket List

Good Morning! I’m going to try to make this quick. I find myself with less to say anyway these days. Consequences I’m sure some parents of kids who bully at school would be appalled to see how their kids act. I’m sure they don’t know it’s happening…. When my kids are old enough I want to head it off at the pass. I will be telling my kids stories like the one out of Southeast Polk this week. Straightforward. If […]

MORNING BUZZ: The Week that Was

It’s been that kind of week. Fast. Blogging has unfortunately taken a backseat to preparations for a short break. We have a wedding to go to this weekend. More on that later…for now I’ll try to catch up. Ooops If I was a taxpayer or parent in the West Des Moines School District, I’d be asking why no one thought to check the sewer system when they decided to drop $62 million on renovations. Isn’t the infrastructure the FIRST thing […]

MORNING BUZZ: Fired, Fried and First…

Good Morning! As I write this Zach Johnson is walking off the 12th green at the British Open having just drained another birdie. He is six under and leading the Championship. If I seemed a bit distracted this morning…that’s the reason. A run by Zach would give me an even better reason for watching the Open…not that I need one. This is my favorite major for its timing. The early morning coverage started at 4am! Perfect for our early shift! […]

    MORNING BUZZ:Let the Countdown Begin

Good Morning! Let the countdown to 40 begin.  I’m 365 days away.  I’m not the kind of person who’s ever thought of a Birthday as “significant” but this one feels a little different.  I’m not sure why but 40 looms.  It’s not because I am feeling old…it’s because I DON’T.  I still feel like I’m 21.  Maybe not physically but in my head I am.  I guess that’s a good thing. Jeriann was nice enough to bring coffee and some […]

MORNING BUZZ: Verdict, Joe, and Daddy Daycare 2

Good Morning! Busy weekend with my sister Katie in town.  She was here to see Sally and I but she hadn’t seen the boys since their Birthday.  We had a great time.  She is a good sport and goes along with us on adventures around town…out with our friends, and keeping the peace at home. Verdict I can see why people feel an acquittal wasn’t a “just” verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial.  The guy shot a kid.  He […]

MORNING BUZZ: Casino, Crash and C’Mon!!

Good Morning.  Hope it’s not too hard to get back to work this morning for all of you. I also hope you had a good Holiday weekend. We spent the night of the 3rd of July just down the hill from Wells Fargo Arena.  The Center Street pedestrian bridge is a great front row seat for the fireworks.  We spent the 36 hours before the fireworks assuring the boys that they would like them…that the “bang” wouldn’t be too loud. […]
