I am the multimedia producer for WHO-TV. Originally from Bartlett, IL, a suburb of Chicago, I came to Des Moines to attend Drake University. I joined the WHO team in July of 2012 and I am responsible for posting stories and video to the web and updating social media accounts.

    The town of Belmond is surveying the damage after Mother Nature sent a tornado roaring through town Wednesday afternoon.     MEMORIAL SERVICE: Community Remembers Kathlynn

    A Webster County teenager who was abducted and killed last month will be laid to rest Thursday. A memorial service for Kathlynn Shepard is scheduled for 1 p.m. at South-East Webster-Grand Middle School in Boxholm. The service is open to the public. Kathlynn and another teenager were abducted from a bus stop in the town of Dayton on May 20th. The other girl escaped to safety.     CONCESSION THEFTS: Police Investigate Two Burglaries

    Des Moines Police are investigating two burglaries at a pool concession stand. Police say someone broke into the stand at Birdland Pool Saturday night and stole about $300 worth of food. On Monday the stand was broken into again and the same amount of food was taken. Police believe the same suspect is responsible for both break-ins, but they are still investigating.

    MISS IOWA: Gaining National Attention

    The new Miss Iowa has only had her crown for a few days, but she’s already grabbing national attention. Last weekend Nicole Kelly was crowned Miss Iowa 2013, the Keokuk native was born without a left forearm. She says the Miss Iowa Crown is giving her a voice to promote her platform of overcoming disabilities.     COURTHOUSE ATTACK: Man Pleads Guilty

    A Mason City man is pleading guilty to attacking two Story County Attorneys at the courthouse earlier this year. Major Robinson entered a written guilty plea to a reduced charge of two counts of assault causing bodily injury. In March, Robinson approached the attorneys in a hallway at the courthouse and started punching them. The attack was caught on surveillance video. Robinson will be sentenced on June 26th. He faces up to two years in prison.

    DOG ATTACK: Young Girl Hospitalized

    A little girl was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after being attacked by a dog. An ambulance was called to a home on Des Moines Street just before 5 p.m. Neighbors say the dog bit the child on the face or neck, while the mother was trying to get rid of the dog because it had been growling at the child.     Five years ago Tuesday a tornado tore through a western Iowa Boy Scout camping, killing four boys and injuring dozens others.     DEADLINE EXTENDED: Grand Avenue Bridge Construction

    Slowed work will cause the Grand Avenue Bridge to remain closed longer. Construction crews had planned to have three lanes of the bridge re-open by September 9, but that date has been pushed back to September 27 instead. Authorities say crews unexpectedly found asbestos on the bridge, which had to be tested and removed. That along with wet weather has pushed back the timeline of the work.     I-80 INTERCHANGE: Bat Study Complete

    Plans for a multi-million dollar interchange may finally be moving forward. Testing has been completed and officials say no endangered bats live at the site of the soon-to-be Interstate-80 interchange at Alice’s Road. Years of planning were halted when an endangered Indiana bat was discovered about a half mile from the construction site.     CUPCAKE STARS: Local Bakery Featured On National Show

    A local bakery will be featured on a national TV show this month. Crème Cupcake and Dessert owner Christina Moffatt will compete on Cupcake Wars on the Food Network. Moffat submitted an audition video last August and was chosen to compete in Los Angeles last fall. Moffat isn’t allowed to say if she won or not, you’ll have to tune in Sunday, June 30 at 7 p.m. to find out.

    INMATE COMMUTATION: Branstad Denies Seven Applicants

    Governor Branstad has denied seven applications from Iowa inmates seeking commutation. Three of the applicants are serving life sentences for murder, two others were convicted of robbery, and two more were convicted of kidnapping and sexual abuse. In his 18 years in office, Governor Branstad has commuted life sentences of three inmates. Most recently he commuted the sentence of Raspberry Williams who was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in 1974, after fatally shooting a man after a […]
