Police says the warning signals were working correctly when a train and car collided Friday morning in Ames.

Authorities responded to the track on the northwest part of Iowa State University’s campus around 3:00 a.m. There they found 55-year-old Laurel Russell of Ames inside a smashed car on the track. She was taken by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital, but ISU police says it appears her injuries are non-life threatening.

Police say preliminary reports suggest Russell drove around the arms and stopped on the track.

The case remains under investigation.
