Art and Science students at Iowa State are finding collaboration is a good thing.

Andrew Friend said, "My wife she was trying to figure out what to do with her painting, so I said, you need to use some bio-char it comes in powder form so it works really well to stick on the painting."

Andrew's wife and her friend entered a competition to do artwork with renewable resources last year.

Their work won the top prize.

Now ISU art students are looking to their science partners in the ISU Biorenewable Research Lab for more inspiration.

This year they are using different plant materials that are usually used in plastics, fuel and fertilizer for their art.

The artists learned about the items Friday and now they'll work on their creations until April.
