Number of fatal accidents in January was higher than usual
The Iowa Department of Transportation says there were an abnormally high number of fatalities in January.
Forty one people died in car crashes in January. Thirteen of them were not wearing seat belts.
The five year monthly average is 27.
The DOT says, while January’s weather was nicer than normal, it did little to prevent fatal accidents.
The report comes on the heels of another report showing 2011 had the least number of traffic fatalities in 67 years.
