A central Iowa school is being recognized for its healthy eating habits.

USDA Undersecretary for Food and Nutrition Kevin Concannon visited Gilbert Elementary Thursday.  He's recognizing the school with a special award.

Concannon joined students in the cafeteria for a healthy lunch.  He says the school has gone above and beyond to create a healthy environment for kids.

Concannon says the school met strict requirements for its school meals.  The school also provides nutrition education and good opportunities for physical activity.

Concannon says, “We are awarding to the Gilbert School the U.S. Healthy School Challenge Silver Award. That means Gilbert is one of 700 such schools that achieved that level out of 101,000 schools in the United States.”

The kids tell us they do get desserts with lunch… sometimes, but not very often.
