A Des Moines man is in the Polk County Jail accused of severely scalding his 3-year-old stepson.

Police say 23-year-old Tarwo Koso called 911 around 12:40 a.m. on March 28th. When officers arrived the skin from the child’s left ankle and down was hanging off of his toes.

Koso claimed his stepson had been scalded while taking a shower, to clean up after he soiled himself. Investigators say the temperature of the water from the shower couldn’t have caused the severe injuries to the child.

The child was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment of the burn.

Koso was arrested Monday and charged with child endangerment causing serious bodily injury. He is being held on a bond of $10,000.

The child’s mother was at work at the time of the injury.
