Des Moines police are investigating a Tuesday afternoon shooting involving teens.

Police responded to the levee near Southeast Third and Livingston around 1:00 p.m. There they found three kids firing a handgun in the woods.

Two Des Moines 15-year-olds were taken into custody and a third was released to his parents.

One teen was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging it in city limits. Another was charged with possession of prescription drugs.

Police say there are several homeless people in the area, and this could have turned into a bad situation fast.

One couple living nearby says they heard five shot fired this afternoon.

“We are down here trying to survive and everything, mind our own business and everything, got kids coming through here with guns, kinda scary, specially the age,” said witness John Dingeman.

Police are now testing the gun to see if it was stolen or if it was used in any other shootings. They’re looking into whether the shooting has any link to a shooting Monday night in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of Clark Street.
