The cause of death for newborn twins found in the trunk of their mother’s car in Huxley in January is being withheld and likely won’t come out until the trial of Jackie Burkle.

Burkle is accused of giving birth to twin daughters at home and killing them between January 5th and January 7th. Police, who were asked to check on Burkle after co-workers noticed she didn’t appear to be pregnant anymore, came to Burkle’s home. The infants’ bodies were found in the trunk of her car, wrapped in towels and inside a duffel bag.

Autopsies were performed on the infants and the Ames Tribune is reporting the state medical examiners office has known the cause of death for weeks, but has been told not to release it by Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes.

Holmes says the cause of death is part of a listing of witnesses and what they will testify about, and that makes the information a non-public record.

Burkle is facing two charges of first degree murder in the deaths of her daughters. She is scheduled to go on trial August 12th.
