The Des Moines school board approved the district budget for the 2012-2013 school year Tuesday night.

The proposed budget is $474 million, which included $364 million from the general fund.

The district says 86-percent of the general fund goes towards instruction and student support. Nine-percent covers district operations and less than five-percent goes to administration costs.

The proposed budget does not include money for new programs. Instead it focuses on maintaining existing programs. It also does not include a change in the district’s tax rate.

The proposal passed the school board unanimously.

The budget will be submitted to Polk County on April 16th.
