The Tampa Bay Rays are hoping the reigning rookie of the year doesn’t have anything more than a bad headache.

Wednesday morning Des Moines-native and Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was doing his off day workout in the bullpen when a batting practice home run from the Detroit Tigers came over the wall and hit him in the face.

The Rays bullpen coach says Hellickson had just thrown a pitch and several of the Tigers yelled “heads up”, but the ball hit Hellickson as he turned his head.

Hellickson was able to answer the paramedics’ questions with no problem but they took him to the hospital as a precaution.

There is no word on whether he’ll miss a start this weekend against Boston.
