Employees at Pioneer Hi-bred challenged themselves to raise big bucks to help out a local shelter.
The grassroots fundraiser by the Homeless Assistance Team at Pioneer helped raise nearly $10,000 that will help create a garden at the Central Iowa Shelter.
The garden will be used so residents can grow fresh fruits and veggies for the shelter to use in their kitchen. They also hope the shelter will eventually be able to sell the produce to local restaurants and even at the farmer's market.
Members of Pioneer were given a tour of the new facilities currently under construction and got to see where their garden would go.
Employees say this was a great way to help the shelter with a project that will keep giving.
"That's a very practical and tangible way we can help our local community do what Pioneer and Du Pont do at a broader level,” said Jan Slusark with Pioneer.
All the money raised was by individual team member contributions at Pioneer.
