Police in Council Bluffs say a man suffered extensive burns when his home exploded Friday morning.

When firefighters arrived shortly before 8:00, both the second floor and the back of the home were on fire.

Police say the owner, 38-year old James Aherns, suffered burns over 50-percent of his body.  He's hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators say items that would cause an explosion were found in the home, but police aren't saying what those items are.
