A northwest Iowa mother is behind bars facing a first degree murder charge for allegedly drowning her 15-month-old son.

Twenty-five-year-old Ashley Cameron of Onawa is accused of holding her son Markis Dahms’ head under a running bathtub faucet, allowing water to run into his mouth and nose. The complaint filed against Cameron says she held the boy under the water for long enough to cause the drowning death.

Onawa Police were called to 615 12th Street just after 7:00 p.m. on February 11th for a child who wasn’t breathing after being in the tub. The child was not able to be revived.

An autopsy performed on Dahms by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office determined his cause of death was drowning and the matter of death was homicide.

Cameron was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with murder. She is being held in the Monona County Jail on a bond of $1 million.
