The Des Moines Register reports that 34 cases of whooping cough have already been reported in Polk County.

Thirty one of those pertussis cases are students.

The Polk County Department of Public Health administered 234 vaccinations at Des Moines Lincoln High School last week where the cases were centered.

The cases range from infant to middle-aged with the majority being students.

Officials urge people with a cough to be checked out by a doctor.  They add that it’s important for people to be up to date on their vaccinations.
